The Importance of Membership in the Registered Massage Therapist Association of Ontario

As a Massage Therapist I must be a member of the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario to call myself a Registered Massage Therapist. The College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) is a regulatory body designed to protect the public and ensure that all RMT’s follow guidelines, ensure the safety of the public and maintain standards of practice.

The Registered Massage Therapist Association of Ontario (RMTAO) is for Massage Therapists. They provide support in several ways.

They act as one voice when communicating to government agencies, insurance companies, Regulated Health professions, and the public. Their voice has ensured that many Insurance companies still pay for Massage Therapy in a Motor Vehicle Accident or Extended Health Care Benefits.

Being a member allows me access to medical periodicals, the latest research in Massage therapy and any relevant information pertaining to my profession. There is also access to Continuing Education Courses. As a teacher, I have used many resources provided by the RMTAO in the classroom. They also have a great career listing resources for new graduates to discover a career path.

Since I am a Therapist that works by myself I find it important to connect with other therapists. The RMTAO provides community based networks where I can meet fellow RMT’s and connect with my profession.

Membership is inexpensive but has paid for itself many times over. Having a listing on RMTfind.com has been good for client referrals. These referrals have paid for my membership several times over. Few therapists utilize this great resource.

The RMTAO also offers many discounted programs for members.

Having been a Massage Therapist for 20+ years I feel it is very important to invest in my profession if I want to see it grow and become more recognized as a primary health care service in Ontario. Being part of the association keeps me inspired and motivated. All RMT’s should invest in their profession and be a member of the RMTAO.

When choosing a therapist ask if they are a member of the RMTAO. Then you will know you are choosing a therapist who is invested in their profession.
